Abstract: ABSTRACT Using of complementary-alternative therapies (ACT) for cancer patient is relatively high in the world nowadays. Researches in developed country have found that the proportion of people using ACT is 7-83. The use of ACT in breast cancer patients was estimated to reach up to 75%. However, cancer stadium and the social demography factor are always found related to the use of ACT. The purpose of this research was to find out proportion, pattern use ACT and the relentionship between social demography factor with ACT of breast cancer patients in Adam Malik Public Hospital and Dr. Pirngadi Public Hospital Medan. The method of this study is qualitative and quantitative method conducted by using cross sectional design. The subjectc of this study are breast cancer diagnosed patient treated in Adam Malik Public Hospital and Pringadi Public Hospital Medan. The sample is 73 patients determined by consecutive sampling. Quantitative data analysis consists of univariable analysis, bivariable analysis with chi-square analysis, and multivariable using logistic regression with p value p < 0,05. Qualitative data analysis was done with description. The results shows that 67,1% out of 73 research subject used ACT. The form of ACT which the most used is pharmacology and biology 93,9% and with main reason to treat the cancer 79,6%. Most information resources are about complementary-alternative therapies from their family 59,2%. The results of bi variable and multivariable analysis shows that age is the only social demography factor which has relationship with the use of complementary-alternative therapies OR= 0,495 (95% CI= 0,248-0,987, p < 0,05). The conclusion reveals that most breast cancer patients are at the age of 40- 49 with the proportion of relatively high usage of ACT. The form of ACT which the most used is pharmacology and biology, with main reason to treat the cancer, and most information resources are about complementary-alternative therapies from their family. Social demography factor: education, employment status, family income, marital status and religion does not have the relationship with ACT excpect age factor. The usage of ACT by the breast cancer patient is found out of the public hospital and is not communicated with paramedics that give the nursing of therapy. The complementary-alternative medicine therapist has not been suitable service with the rule that arrange about ACT.
