Correlation between Parents’ Knowledge and Dental and Oral Hygiene Levels in School Age Children

ABSTRACT

Dental and oral hygiene is the state of the teeth in the oral cavity that are free from plaque and other impurities such as debris, tartar, and food residue. Inadequate knowledge of mothers about dental and oral hygiene is a predisposing factor for behavior that does not support children's dental and oral hygiene. This study aims to find out the correlation between parental knowledge on the level of dental and oral hygiene of school-age children. This research is a systematic review of 10 journals published in the last 5 years. Through a systematic review, it was found that 50% of parents' knowledge about dental and oral hygiene was in poor criteria, 30% in good criteria, and 20% in fair criteria; 50% of the average OHI-S scores are in the poor criteria; 30% in moderate criteria, and 20% in good criteria; 60 articles stated that there was a correlation between parental knowledge and the level of dental and oral hygiene in school-age children. This study concludes that parents' knowledge about dental and oral hygiene of school-age children is in good criteria and there is a correlation between parental knowledge and the level of dental and oral hygiene of school-age children. It is hoped that parents will increase their knowledge about dental and oral hygiene through print/electronic media or other information.
