Systematic Review: Description of Knowledge Level of Toothbrushing on the Incidence of Dental Caries in Elementary School Children

ABSTRACT

Dental caries is a disease of the teeth and mouth and is often found in school-age children. Data for Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) North Sumatra, 2018, it is known that 53.61% of children aged 5-9 years have cavities. Through the data, it is known that 94.7% of the Indonesian population has good and correct brushing behavior but only 2.8% brushes their teeth at the right time. This study is a systematic review of 10 articles published between 2017-2021 which aims to get an overview of the level of knowledge of brushing teeth with the incidence of dental caries in elementary school children. Through the results of a review of 10 journals, it is known that the level of knowledge of brushing teeth for elementary school children is 60% in the bad category and 40% in the good category; the incidence of dental caries in elementary school children is 50%; and the level of dental caries is 20% in the good category, 20% in the fair category, and 10% in the poor category. This systematic review concluded that low knowledge of brushing teeth causes the incidence of dental caries in elementary school children.
