CORRELATION BETWEEN THE HABIT OF CARIOGENIC FOOD CONSUMPTION AND DENTAL CARIES IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

ABSTRACT

Dental caries is one of the most common diseases found in school-age children. One of the causes of caries is the habit of consuming cariogenic foods, types of foods that play a role in the formation of dental caries such as chocolate, candy, cakes and sweet foods. Cariogenic foods make children very susceptible to dental caries. This study is a systematic review of 10 journals, and aims to determine the correlation between cariogenic food consumption habits and the incidence of caries in school-age children. Through the results of a systematic review of 10 articles, it is known that 10 articles (100%) found that respondents consumed cariogenic foods, especially foods in the sweet category; and the frequency of consumption of cariogenic foods was in the frequent category, found by 9 articles (90%). This study concludes that there is a correlation between the habit of consuming cariogenic foods and the incidence of dental caries in elementary school children, stated in 8 articles (80%) while 2 articles (20%) did not find such a correlation in elementary school children.
